Alert. This Is A Rant

Is this your favorite day of the week or way? Mine sure is.

This Friday I’m freezing my T-Rex Panamanian butt cuz I’m in New York City baby! That’s right, I exchanged tropical paradise for layers + schizophrenic weather to attend Marie Forleo’s Rich Happy and Hot LIVE. I might not be able to sport my polka dot bikini here, but at the very least I’ll get to hug, like LIVE, some of my favorite people in the planet.

If you’re here, you better tell me. I want to hug you too!

If you’re home instead, don’t be jealous, that’s pretty awesome too because you get to watch today’s episode in your pajamas or even commando if you wanted to. That’s something worth hooraying about for sure.

Today’s Friday Video Time is a rant.

The Urban Dictionary defines rant as: When someone is pissed about something and they ramble on about it. My definition is quite different + it goes like this: A rant is a bombastic proclamation of a yucky ulcer-inducing fact that has the potential to be turned around with a little kick in the pajama pants.

Are you ready? Here I go. Hit play + let the rant begin.

Before you head out, I invite you to use the comment to ask your peers what they see when they visit your website. We are one of the kindest communities I have ever seen in the interwebs + I’m sure that if you ask for help, help will be provided.

Thank you so much for showing up + being here for each other. You know were I’ll be.

xo,

Mayi Carles

    Hey Mayi

I completely agree! What’s the point of getting online to express yourself if what you’re expressing… isn’t even YOU!? I’m still tweaking my site slightly and finding what exactly people would find useful for me to share (my bag of ‘skills tricks’ is varied in my genre). If you have time out from your social hugging in NY feel free to critique my site! I must say, I love your vlogs and have thought of adding my own vlogs to my site but until I’m really ready with what I want to say I know they’ll end up coming down as they WON’T be supporting my brand etc, although currently… I’m not selling consultations… my volunteering in home educating communities has be busy and happy! :)

Love your blog, your art and YOU!
    Thanks

    Tamara

AMENNNNNNN Tamara. “What’s the point of getting online to express yourself if what you’re expressing… isn’t even YOU!?” Could not have phrased it better myself. Thank you for your brilliance!

  • Tamara says:

    has be=has me… eek I knew I shoulda spell checked :/

  • This is something that drives me nuts – having had my content and drawings stolen and passed off as someone elses’ content on numerous occasions I’ve always reached out and told them:

    1. It’s NOT COOL.
    2. They are cheating themselves at the end of the day
    3. IT IS OK to be inspired by someone but make it YOURS!

oooh you inspired me to get a bit ranty too!

Because I had a very juicy biz session with someone with magic powers I decided to change my brand/image and make it my own. Although I was not copying no one (I had a personal graphic designer doing things for me!) I was trying to do things as others did. I even thought I wanted to have a crafts/diy blog just because that were the websites I spent more time on. But I didn’t.
So I decided to change everything. I made it more clean + modern + friendly like if it were my virtual home. My brand now it’s me! And my last addition to my site were some photos of me (that truly express my personality) that I shoot with a very dear friend in my own house. She made the styling, make up and photos and they turned out amazing and no money was spent :) (You know Gina, right?)
Now I feel I have something that distinguishes me from others. My real voice is being heard.

Mayi, your videos are getting better and better each time! Big hug!

    Hi Mayi!
I’m in NYC + I can’t wait to meet YOU…Live is going to rock. I’m trying really hard to speak to people without acting like a starstruck crazy person. :) . BTW chocolate souffle is really good in NYC + I’m starting to feel like Carrie Bradshaw :)

PS Ya’ll can look at my site if you want to, but it is Still very much a work in progress so be kind + don’t make me hide under the covers in NYC because I’ve got ooddles of people to get to know + I need to be bubbly + caffeinated not sad + squimmish :)

    • Marta Costa says:

I’ve seen your website and loved it! Creative and unique. I signed up, too ;)

    • Ana says:

Kimberly, I can tell you’re working on your website. I LOVE the font on the sign-up bar. I do have a suggestion: your social media icons are cute, but they somehow don’t fit with the rest of your site, you may want to grab a different set. But it’s looking good!

      • Kimberly says:

So very true about the icons! I used a wp plugin for them, but I’m desiging my own they just aren’t ready yet…each one will be a different caffeinated beverage with the letter of the social media group in the beverage so glad you noticed it too! :)

This is definitely a wake up call (not the first this week)! I’ve always struggled with having multiple identities and sites… not knowing how to combine it all to something that is me… because that would be a true reflection of me and my capabilities. I think often we try this and that and things get muddled up… time to step back and look at the big picture as a whole! I will definitely be thinking things through… thanks for sharing your rant :)

    • Mayi Carles says:

So happy this resonated with you + stroke a cord. That usually a good sign, that you’re ready for the life lesson. You are open + knowledge awaits to those who embrace it. Let this simmer + I’m sure you will find all the answers that your looking for.

    Hello Mayi
I really appreciate your video this week.

  • Amy says:

Hi Mayo! Greetings from a fellow illustrator!! Going to Live too, looking forward to meeting! :)

  • Tatiana says:

Hola Mayi!, Bienvenida a Nueva York!!

    Hey Girl, Welcome to NYC!

You lucked out this week, because it hasn’t been freezing here YET. LOL
I live in NYC, and wish to meet you in person. Will you be speaking live at any venues, events this weekend?
Thank you for your insightful tips, they have helped me a lot in trying to get my event planning business up and running.

Thanks again! And I hope you are enjoying your stay here in NYC. Have you been to any of the Museums here? If so, I recommend The Cloisters Museum in Manhattan. It’s a nice 45 min subway ride, but when you get to the museum you will see that it’s well worth the trip. It’s my ultimate favorite museum here in NYC. Enjoy your stay and Welcome to NY once again.

OHHH WAOOO that sounds like an amazing trip. I wish I had more down time to chill + sink in all the NY magic. Between RHH LIVE + one of my best friends weddings on Sunday + meeting my baby niece Lucy I feel I will barely have time for NY cupcakes LOL!

  • Cathy says:

    Hey you all!
Mayi has once again touched a nasty subject in an simple yet amazing way. Congrats on another successfull FVT!!!!
So, here goes my opinion, for whatever it might worth…

Mayi, do I really need to say how amazingly you your site is? You’re a rocking example of what you’ve said on your FVT! But you knew that already… ;)

Marta, although I don’t really go on your site regularly, I’ve been there a couple of times and I got to say I loved the changes! Your site is really clean, simply and friendly! And those pics turned out sooooo gooooood!!! Keep it up!

Kim, I’ve been absent of your page for a couple of weeks now, and wow what a change!!!! But… Where did all the cupcakes go? Don’t tell me you’ve traded them in for coffee! :P
Wow girl, you’ve really given it a big twist! And with that came a bit more of maturity, perhaps, in the sense that you are now using the colours in a totally different way. And those kind of police like tapes on your header make it all that much more serious… Although one can not avoid laughting when reading it! ;) And your bubbly personality still comes through!
Just a little thing for you to check out: The fonts you’ve choosen are fine and readable on most part, but become harder to understand on the side blocks. Don’t know if that’s on purpose to make people click on it to see it or not.

Tamara, you’re page is ok, and I believe the theme is kind of unique. But, if you don’t mind my opinion, you could perhaps give it a little twist and jazz it up some more. I’ve just been checking it out (had never been there before) and I got to say you seem to be so filled with energy and fun and commitment to your kids, and that does show on the photos and texts you post, but not on the site per say.

Amena, I’ve also just met you for the first time and your page totally catched my eye and left me wondering about what you have to offer. So, I guess this means you are spreading the message right! Girl, you look fun, idiotic (in the sense that you have a lot of ideas!), fully energized, geared up and ready to go! No wonder people try and copy from you! ;P

Linda, you really have much on your plate! Your main/presentation page seems nice and clean, inviting and friendly user. Then you have totally different styles on all your other sites. If you see them isolated from one another, they all look good and adequated to the service in offer. But checking them all makes it a bit confusing. It’s great to see you can rock it on several different ways and styles, but all the same one gets to wonder if you really have the time for it all and what we can count on. Maybe you could find a way to join your forces into a bigger one! After all, how many “about pages” do you really need? And your worlds don’t collide, they complement each other, so go for it girl!!! ;)

Amy, your page is cute and straight to the point! Your illustrations are very nice and I love the way you present them both on your header showcase roll, as in the recent projects down bellow, as well as you make sure people know you are the artist behind it all by showing images of on going projects and supplies in between these. Keep on rocking it! ;)

Ana, your blog is way too sweet, but it becomes a bit confusing as you sometimes have things only in english, others only in spanish, others half way in both languages… And that’s a pitty, for you seem to have great ideas to share and do it in a very good way, only your readers might not always be able to understand you if they don’t speak both languages… Oh, but you have such amazing pictures! There’s just one missing out… Your picture on your about page! ;)

So, now that I’ve been throuogh everyone else’s page, anyone up to go through mine and give me some feedback? I’d love to hear your opinion!!! I know I have things to improve (and I’m working on some), but what do you think?

Keep it up girls! You know you all rock!

    XOXO

    Cathy

PS – Congrats to Ursula on winning the bamboo! ;)

  • That’s the nicest, most encouraging rant I have ever seen Mayi. You are amazing :) Hope you are safe in NY right now!

  • Hello Mayi, dropped in for a visit to your Friday Video and as always so inspirational and energy-inspiring…busy finishing my M.Ed. but hope to get back to artwork and new website after the holidays. Need to talk! Always love visiting! Andi

  • I noticed a very obvious copycat site recently and it made me very sad. Why do people do that? Sadness.
