Wanna Hangout?

Nine years ago, I quit my “real” job to become an online superstar.

Kidding.

I wanted to quit my “real” job to become an artist. The online superstar part was totally optional.

I started a blog, cause I though that’s what you do when you want to make a living on the Internet.

For months my grandma was the only one that read it.

And then, I got this email from a girl who lived millions of miles away inviting me to be a part of a blog tour.

My first reaction was: She must have the wrong person. So I immediately replied, “YES!!!” Just like that, in all caps and more exclamations than I’d like to admit. I acted quickly. Secured my chance. God forbid she found out I wasn’t really a big deal and changed her mind.

That’s how I met my best friend and one of the most brilliant, biz savvy and downright insane creative minds in the world – April Bowles.

The rest, as they say, is history.

If you don’t already know April, you will absolutely LO-VE her. Like, girl crush, psycho stalker mode LOVE her to pieces.

She is wicked smart (like Hermione), bossy as hell (it’s hilarious), can fish tail her own hair (so jealous), runs the world with a cup of hot tea in her hand (preferably an Anthropology mug), and is the girl to blame behind all my ku-ra-zy pants ideas (including but not limited to making me wear an adult tutu for a promo trailer.)

We’ve been partner for longer than anyone we’ve seen these days. And in Internet years, which fly faster than dog years, that means something. We are a dinosaur duo, pretty much. We’ve survived launches + vacations (with our husbands) + Hurricanes (literally and metaphorically) + sickness + health + loss + birth… we made it through… and we’re still standing, but it feels more like hanging out.

Wanna hangout with us?

Over the next few weeks, I’m hosting a bunch of LIVE events to chat about creative business + lifestyle design… and the messy middle. You bring the caramel popcorn, I’ll bring my bestie.

April and I come together ONCE A YEAR to bring you Operation World Domination – a mastermind for creatives and innovators who want to make a living doing art, any kind.

We’re spilling the beans about what’s coming ahead TODAY!!! A Facebook Live at 3PM EST. You can join us right here on my fanpage!

It’s going to be a super fun call. You want to be there. If you can’t make it, check my page later for the replay.

And then, we have a bunch of other stuff planned for us to hangout.

Here’s our upcoming event calendar:

Here are the links:

Yes… that list includes a Q&A with the one and only Marie Forleo. Pinch me!

We’re so excited to host a call with Marie this year so OUR PEOPLE have the opportunity to ask her questions related to B-School. Instead of a huge call where you feel completely overwhelmed, you get your own special call with us as the hosts, helping you to feel comfortable. Come prepared with any questions you have for Marie and we’ll help you get them answered.

April and I hope to see you today at 3PM EST on my FB Fanpage.

I’m throwing a dance party on my Instagram right before. Come watch!

I’m soooooo excited to kickstart our Operation World Domination and B-School 2018 season with you.

My #1 Money Making Tip

A lot of people get stuck on the making-money part of being girl boss. “But, how do you REALLY make a living Mayi?”, they ask.

It’s a good question.

Everything eventually comes back to money, doesn’t it? Well, it’s gotta come from somewhere, right? I wish leprechauns will just sneak into our homes at night while we’re sleeping with large bags of cash. But until then, we gotta bring peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to the table legally.

You’ve followed your calling, now what?

The first step to making money is to stop Googling things like, “how to make money.” Not because you shouldn’t want to make money, but because the stuff you’re going to find by doing that is highly likely going to help you lose money.

You wanna know what my #1 money making tip? Hit play!

Focus on surviving.

Get rich slowly, by your own means.

That’s how you build a profitable empire. That’s how you earn the badge of THE BOSS.

Now, I would love to hear your #1 money making tip. Share it in the comments!

This Is How My Illustrations Come to Life

Hi I’m Mayi Carles, a tiny Panamanian artist with a T-Rex heart making a living on the internet by being myself, owning my weird and sharing all the lessons I’ve learned along the way, including the messy middle.

And this is how my whimsical illustrations come to life (in case you are curious):

Let’s recap:

  • First, I sketch my quirky illustrations by hand with a .5 mechanical pencil on an 8.5 x 11 sheet of papel.
  • Second, I paint by hand with acrylic paints for a that painterly look that feels like a real human being did it, cuz computers can’t do what my hand can.
  • Third, I scan.
  • Forth, I clean up in Photoshop + vectorize it in Illustrator.
  • Fifth, I share it with you.

If you would like to know the specifics about the tools I use, I talk about that in this post!

Is there anything else you would like to know about my process? Ask away in the comments.

Thanks for watching.
