DIY Wine Cork Coasters

Hey wine lovers out there. Oh boy, wait till you see the super fun DIY project I have in store for you.
It all began when David + I started dating. We’re not big party animals (well David used to be, but I think he got tired LOL) but we do enjoy our occasional wine night every now + them, specially when we go to my parents country house in El Valle.
We started collecting our wine corks + unexpectedly we landed ourselves a big pile. When did we drink all those bottles? Times flies. As an irreparable neat freak, I knew I needed to find a crafty project that would help me recycled them + put them to good use. That’s how the light bulb ding donged + this project was born.
Made from sliced wine corks, this DIY Wine Cork Coasters are the perfect way to recycle + reuse an item that you may otherwise just toss in the trash.
materials
For this project you’ll need:

- At least 25 wine corks
- Hot glue gun with glue sticks
- Thin cork paper circles
- A pocket knife
- A cutting board
- Coarse sand paper
step by step
When you gather all the troops, follow these oh to simple photo actions:

alternatives
The possibilities are trully endless with this one. If you go on a wine binge (uhhh that sounds kinda fun + dangerous LOL), you could make cork wreaths + cork boards + cork mats + cork trivets + cork everything with this technique. Ohh + do keep in mind that the wider the variety of wine corks, the more eclectic + memorable your projects will look.

I don’t know about you folks, but I’m gonna make a handful of these for some house warming parties I have in the close horizon. Seems like the perfect gift + the best excuse for a happy hour (wink).
xo,
Mayi Carles

Mayi-what a cool idea! I’m going to have to try this with some of the random stuff I have around the house. Take care chica!
Ohhhh + this is a perfect excuse for a happy hour
If you take pics send me so I can post them
Cork is such a beautiful material ..and so easy to recycle. I love this project.
This is a terrific idea!!
Lakshmi: Totally agree. Love cork. I started collecting it + didn’t even know why but I knew something pretty would come up!
Aww thanks Andi
Hope you give it a try!
I just wanted to say: You rock! And I love all your tips. I just started my own “transformation” to a more active and productive life and I absolutely adore your tips.
Keep up the great work!
This is so simple but yet so cool!!! Great idea for recycling wine corks! I may have to start drinking more wine!
Oh I love this! I’m definitely making some for Christmas gifts!! Can I ask, did you actually use wine corks that were from bottles? Because the ones I pull out of bottles seem to expand so much on one end that it’d be hard to line up? Did itjust take some arranging?
Hey Suzy: Ohhh yeah these are 100% real + used corks. Like you said their bottoms are not that perfect, but that doesn’t matter because you’ll split them in half anyways so it’s a perfect way to re-use them.
Good luck with your crafty project
Where did you get the cork circles? All I can find are sheets or rolls
I found my cork circles at Home Depot. They were in the garden section. All different sizes. They are used to put under your potted plants.
How much were the cork circles?
Not more than $5. But I bought them locally here in Panama at a hardware store.
Just curious how you made sure that the half corks were all the same depth. Did you measure them? Thanks!
Hey Erin, I got them at a local “ferreteria” which is an equivalent to a Home Depot in the States. Hope you find them.
Aww well thanks Pam. I’m sure my readers will appreciate your insight. People YOUUUWHOOOO! You can buy at Home Depot in the garden section. Brilliant!
Hey Barbara: Luckily I haven’t run into that problem yet. I’ve made about 20 of these with a variety of wine bottles corks + no unstable glasses or cups to date. I suspect that if I did run into this problem I would just sand down the slight difference. Hope this helps
Oh I love those! I am obsessed with all the DIY Coasters ideas floating around lol. I just tried my hand at ceramic tile coasters, so check out my post if you have a chance! =] I am giving away a set of four to a random commenter.

Love the idea. Thx.. However I’m going to take slices of the corks to insure that they are level. I’ve been saving our corks just waiting for the perfect project. Thanks again
wow it’s different i like it cool idea i got to start saving my corks
so the pic with the sandpaper…are you supposed to sand the whole thing? is this so they absorb the cup sweat? Love these and making some today!!!
Love them, your coasters are so cool! Great post too, I have this linked to my cork post today – for inspiration!
Is it possilble to put some sort of border or edging around the cork coasters? If so what would you recommend?
These are a really lovely idea, I keep saving corks with no idea what to do with them so this is perfect!
