Sell Your By-Products

I had a mayor breakdown/breakthrough this week. I hope it’s a little bit less down than through thou. Break-through is good. Breaking-down, not so much.

Crazy decisions are being made at the Mayi Carles HQ. One day I’m praying for the demolition to end. The next I’m in rebirth frenzy. I’ve never felt this brave + nauseous + alive. Holy-guaca-moly!

Revolutions always feel a little dramatic, don’t they?

Choosing to live + take risks is an act of defiance. I bet you know all about being both brave + afraid. You warrior you.

Today’s Friday Video Time episode is a lesson in leaping without ruining your piggy bank. I know it sounds ridiculous + contradictory + that’s exactly why you’ll want to turn up your speakers + jam with me.

your turn

I want you to think about what you create. Look with a magnifying glass. Are there any leftovers you can turn into hefty profit? Find + repackage + conquer!

There’s good money to be made everywhere, so you can keep doing what you love, F-O-R-V-E-R!

Mayi Carles

You are the coolest, my friend! I am so glad that the concept inspired you as much as it inspired me!

The major credit for this super smart brilliant concept goes to Jason Fried (co-founder and president of 37signals and co-author of the book REWORK). I just love passing along helpful info, especially if it is this good 😉

I learned this concept of “selling your by-products” last weekend at a designer’s retreat. It was great and that was one of the many brilliant nuggets of info that stayed with me!

Jason Fried talks about this more here: http://37signals.com/svn/posts/1620-sell-your-by-products

Thanks for another awesome FVT, lovely! You are such an inspiration! Love youuu to pieces!

  • Mayi, your are such an inspiration. Thanks for today’s episode, is really very helpful!!!!!

  • Katie says:

I love this idea, and I LOVE that necklace! The issue I run into is trying to turn everything into a product, and being overwhelmed with ideas. How do I know which ones are good enough?

    • Enna Ferrer says:

I loved Mayi. I already have an idea of a great By -product. Keep being yourself, you are very special!!

    • Mayi Carles says:

OHH OHHHHH I know exactly what you need. You need to play judge. Have you ever seen Cupcake Wars or Iron Chef. Well the panel of judges has their own little criteria on how the give points. 30 points for taste. 20 for presentation. 10 for creativity… etc. + etc. What are your criteria? Do you even have a criteria. I know I didn’t… but it’s SOOOO important. Some things to think about: Impact + return on investment + resources needed (which obviously includes your time). Battle it out! You the boss!

    • Mayi Carles says:

Awwwww thanks girlfriend. I got it from a Spanish designer on Etsy. It feels like an uniform, but a cool uniform if you know what I mean.

  • Jody says:

By-products… hum, AWESOME! Never thought of that in that way… I have a bunch of them around here! Oh yes, let’s recycle!
    You rock!

  • I LOVE you, Mayi! This is perfect timing for me, as I am starting work on an ebook that is taking the by-product concept very literally! Super-excited to be writing and helping people to transform their juicer by-products into delicious and healthy foods and saving money and food waste at the same time! Thanks for the Friday push x

  • Laura says:

Mayi! Yes! I loved today’s video! I never really thought of it that way, but I guess I’m in the middle of doing that right now putting together my newest project… I’m scared + nervous but so excited! (Will be emailing you about it again soon…) Can’t wait to see your new projects! Blessings, L

    • Mayi Carles says:

Yeahhhh. That’s exactly how I felt. I’m was like, “Wait a minute. I’ve never heard this concept before, but I think I’ve done it anyways hehehehe”.

Excited to see all the goodies you whip out Laura.

  • Clemencia says:

No time creating is time wasted! thank you sooooo much for sharing this 🙂 Thanks for the inspiration to keep us going 🙂

  • Kristi says:

I know this is brilliant, because I do it!

Since I started designing fabric, I also use those designs to make things for my Society6 shop AND my shops on Etsy. There are lots of people who like my designs but may not need fabric (or wallpaper!) from spoonflower, but they’ll buy the design on a bookmark or t-shirt or one of my printable projects. WAY cool. <3

Hi, Mayi. 🙂 I still love your bangs. 🙂

  • AlexM says:

very interesting concept you share today Mayi. Muchas gracias! Lo voy a pensar mucho y aplicarlo. Buen fin de semana!

  • Farideh says:

OOo this is one of my favorites Mayi! I’ve realized I could take some previous work and repackage it for a new audience AND I could write a little book about the lessons I learned selling that previous work 🙂 HA

Thanks for being a source of inspiration and upliftment!

  • This makes so much sense. Only recently have I really been thinking of the non-sewing aspects of what I do as part of my zero-waste ethos. That perspective gives it value rather than a wimpy ‘extra’ thing I’m doing. It’s not! It’s PART of the plan to take over the world, right? By-products aren’t really extras. You never know when your by-product may turn out to be your best idea providing solutions for people in a big way. Great video!
