The Secret to Sticking with It! (Challenge Inside)

I’m in fully fiesta mode today – picking up the secret present + hiding it + making dessert, because Hubby’s turning 31 tomorrow. It’s not my Italian themed party but I celebrate if I want to, cuz if there’s something I love more than my own happy birthday is organizing my man’s day.

I suspect though that somewhere in-between tonights artichoke dip + panna cotta my monkey brain will take over + detour my clean diet until further notice. Maybe some Monday.

Good habits are darn hard to stick to, but breaking them only takes a Cinnabon… a snooze button… a crappy e-mail… a sprinkle to push you over the dark side of the force. Not fair indeed.

The good news is that I figured a way to stick with habits (the good kind) that doesn’t require a rocket science degree or freezing your credit cards Confessions of a Shopaholic style. My solution is insanely practical + not what you’d expect.

And keep your eyes + ears pealed for the outtakes. You would think that time + practice would teach me how to nail these vids in one take. Think again.

Do you want to start a 30 Day Challenge with me + the Heartmade gang? All you have to do to participate is:

  1. Commit to the challenge by clicking the “I Commit” badge below the video.
  2. Pick a habit you really want to nail + that will make you happier.
  3. Share your challenge with the family in the comments below.
  4. Record your progress with a printed calendar + red sharpie!

The nuts + bolts of the operation:

  • Challenge kick-starts this Monday, March 11, 2013.
  • It runs for 30 days straight.
  • Use the hashtags #heartmade #30daychallenge to track your progress on social media.
  • Bonus points for taking pictures of the journey + sharing of course. I’ll be doing the same from my Insta-house.

Our mission, which I’m assuming you’ll accept, is to build chains collectively. Let’s do this thing!

Oh, Mayi! I needed this so bad today. Thank you, thank you, thank you! I had been going strong with my healthy meal plan for 10 days, but everything fell apart yesterday. Thank you for the reminder that I need to pick myself up and keep going. 🙂

  • Marcela says:

Love it! I commit to running every morning, as soon as my children leave for school

  • claire stone says:

OOOh, this is sooo exciting. I am totally loving this idea. I commit every day to writing something. Either for my blog, my detox, my journal, my love letters to my kids for when they grow up. Doesn’t matter what. Just has to be something.

  • Jessica says:

How fun. It’s kind of like earning gold stars (which I find more motivating than a proper grown up probably ought ;-)). I commit to rebounding daily (instead of my “most days” current habit). Looking forward to building that chain.

  • Julie says:

ok, so need to do this! I totally connected with your video. problem is I have quite a list of things I need to do! haha… but, one step at a time. for now, I am going to walk the dogs every morning for at least 20 minutes… and by that I mean walk with them… not go outside and watch them run around the yard like maniacs while I watch from the porch 🙂

  • Jessie says:

I so needed this!!!! I did a 21 day cleanse (jj virgin diet) and took 7 food items (wheat, dairy, peanuts etc.) from my diet and I did well. I restarted adding 1 food item after the 21 days and felt awesome. THEN…..I went to visit my parents and mom (yes my mom) decided to cook all these foods that I normally do not cook that has most of the ingredients that I should not be having!!! Yikes, I fell of the wagon and now starting back up. I commit to going back to eating healthy for 30 days and add my work out routine to it. I can do it! I can do it! I can do it!!! 🙂

PS. I am taping the calendar to my fridge! Crazy stainless steel won’t let me do a magnet on it! 🙂

  • Geneviève says:

    It’s a deal.

I commit to exercice 3 times a week, Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

For a whole month? YEAH FOR A WHOLE MONTH! 😛

  • suzy says:

I commit to juicing and running! I have 3 5ks runs this year and this tracker will help me. I can’t wait.

  • Cin says:

  • I’m going to play music everyday for the next 30 days!!

  • Good idea,
But there are so many things I would like to change. Eat healthy, exercise, work on my monsters, spread the word about my monsters. What do I choose. Some things are not an every day kind of thing. I what to ride my bike to work instead of going by car, but I work only three days a week. Can I choose more than one goal?

  • Cole says:

I can`t wait to get started! My challenge is to start eating proper meals. I have been pretty lazy lately, and skipping breakfast often, and sometimes even lunch. Not good at all.

  • Nina says:

I commit to getting up every morning at 6:30 when my alarm goes off–no excuses! Five days already, and now another 30 days straight! Thanks for the challenge, Mayi. Now I feel like I have some accountability.

  • Perfect timing for the 11th Mayi! Its like everything is lining up on that day! Paleo + Workout Schedule are my commitments. These last 20 lbs need to shoo outta here! lol. I know I can do it if I stick to this challenge. Totally needed this. Thanks peque! Abrazitos! 😀

  • I commit to drawing and painting everyday.
Also, exercising at home + running 3 times per week.
And keeping up with writing at the blog 3 times per week.
And sticking to only 2 teaspoons sugar per day + no products with added / hidden sugar (tomato sauce, etc).
Mayi you are the best. I am still waiting for your interview to come up at Foreignator, for some reason the interviews are in the wrong order and I can’t see yours, I have been reloading it like crazy.
    Have a great weekend !

  • Amanda says:

I needed this! Not only have I recently started eating healthier, but also need to get off my tush and get more work done in my businesses daily, so those will be my 30 day goals.

  • Diane says:

Great idea and video, Mayi. I’m working on changing my eating habits and getting more exercise. Love the challenge idea and calendar. Going to dive in and do it!!

  • Maya says:

Yes! I commit! Love your videos and all your advice and this is coming at the perfect time. I have started a checklist but it’s not as straight forward and simple as yours. So, I commit to simple and to draw something everyday! Thank you Mayi! 🙂

  • Iluska Ikeda says:

Oh yes, I commit as well. I’ll be limiting my time on the internet to twice daily 30 minutes each. Whatever I get done during those times is what I get done. No more wasted time on facebook or twitter.

And I also commit to painting/drawing everyday, but this one is easy, I already do it, haha. Xoxo

  • Hanna says:

Yes, yes, yes! I commit! It’s not a matter of wanting to change a habit anymore, I need to do this! I’ve been having constant back and neck pain because of muscle tension, so I’m committing to doing a relaxing and stretching routine every single day for the next 30 days (and hopefully beyond). Loving this challenge!

  • Suzie says:

I have been doing this for several months and it really does work. The keys for me were to make to simple, easy and fun. I used a pink marker and then switched to purple to kinda mix things up. I started with small easy steps. Some days I do more, but most days I do my “minimum.” It really does create forward momentum. I started with three habits and am now up to five.

  • Jessica Scheer says:

My challenge is to follow through on my morning ritual.
    drink water (or tea)
    do yoga/stretching
meditate on a positive mantra for the day
**ALL before I look at my phone 🙂

  • Paulina says:

I commit to 30 days of NO CARBS!!!!!! I’ve done exactly what you say in the video! not only do i eat carbs but I eat them ALL DAY EVERYDAY!!! so for 30 days I commit to the challenge! I can do it I can do it!

  • Jacolien says:

    Great great idea Mayi.
I’m gonna join the challenge with promising I’ll do 50 sit-ups everyday for at least 30 days in a row.
Still need to find a calendar to tick-off every single day though…

  • Sarah says:

Thank you for this challenge Mayi! I commit to doing something creative everyday – I am just starting my handmade cards and scrapbooking business and I need to make products…but I’ve been plagued with a case of “what-if-I-am-not-good-enough” disease that freaks me out and doesn’t let me create. So I will try to put aside that nagging inner critic and get to work 🙂

  • Angie says:

I love this challenge I’ve already fallen off the wagon so to speak wit one of my goals for this year, so count me in! I will make one piece of jewelry everyday for the next 30 days. Yippee!

  • Leslie says:

I am going to commit to start running again (after a long break, ugh, why do I do that to myself?!!) and also get my craft room tided and organized. Do something in there everyday to where I know where everything is and I can create for me and for $$.
    Thank you!!!

  • Zoe says:

I’m going 30 days chocolate-free. It’s one I’ve been trying to nail for a while so this is the perfect way to finally crack it!

  • Kelly says:

30 Days of my “mini” workout. I’m starting with what I can do and hopefully, after 30 days, I’ll be able to do more 🙂

  • Grace says:

Mayi!! I love this idea. I’ve been trying to workout more, but I’ve fallen into a slump lately, haha.. Where can I get the spreadsheet that you have in the first picture?? Please add it to your Etsy store! It seems like a great, easy way to keep track of something and it will be super easy to see your whole year’s progress at a glance.

  • Renee says:

Thank you for the awesome post as always Mayi! I will step to the plate! I will do 30 days of meditation each day for at least 5 minutes in the morning! 🙂

  • Graziela says:

This is great!!! I commit to spend an hour with my son every day, just me and him, without phone, internet and interruptions. With all the things we must do everyday these important but not urgent things may be left out!!! Today we read, played with his little cars and sang together!!

  • Ginger says:

I’m committing to painting something everyday be it small or large or in my art journal paint on something! I’m a little late so I start it today March 14th!

  • Monica Lee says:

OMG! You totally made me laugh this morning! You are too cute and too funny…ok and too RIGHT. I have fallen off the exercise wagon…with all those excuses that you mentioned! AND I have indulged in waaaaay to much sugar, NOT a good combo. Loved the outtakes! Filming yourself is so hard!

    • Mayi Carles says:

Tell me about it sista’. These last videos have taken AGES to film. If it’s not the battery running our half way, it’s the memory card going bananas on me. I dream of the day I’ll have my very own filming ump a lumps crew 🙂 hahaha

  • A little late, I commit too walking three miles a day . You a Great! Thank you <3
