Vlogging 101: Prep Work

You asked for it, Vlogging 101 for aspiring blog movie stars is here!

Now before I get down to the pressure points let me first ask you this: Do you like my Friday Video Time episodes? Do you look forward to catching the next one + the one after that? Do you find the content valuable? Do you enjoy digesting your creative business advice party style? Does my goofiness + bloopers + party props make you smile? Do you catch yourself singing the “It’s Friday Video” tune?

If you responded yes to at least one of my question, I can die a happy women!

It’s true, I L-O-V-E making vlogs, but that’s not the only reason why I have them as my signature appearance of the site. You see, vlogging has changed the entire game for me. It has single handedly brought more visits + shares + tweets + sales + heartfelt comments + e-mails + subscribers + clients than anything else I’ve attempted. No wonder I’m so hooked. No wonder you’re still here hanging out with me (wink).

I know the idea of putting yourself on camera can me nauseating, I felt it too. But video can truly revolutionize the way you share ideas + spread your message + connect with your right people, so you have to at least give it your best shot, right?

That’s why I’ve put together this free series called Vlogging 101, which I’m not so secretly called Video Blogging Basics for Creative Entrepreneurs Who Secretly Dream of Becoming Movie Stars, to share with you all I know about making videos.

Today’s show explores the basic preparatory questions you must ask yourself before jumping on the video blogging wagon, cuz seriously why wing it if you bullet proof the ride, correct? I thought so too.

I’m thinking about vlogging (especially when I interview someone) so I really enjoyed your video this morning!

I asked a few person about video editing and most of them are on Mac… I didn’t find many options on PC 🙁 Maybe I’ll learn more next week? 🙂

Thank you so much for making this great work sheet!

  • Kagan says:

It’s no secret that I eagerly await Friday Video Time. This week’s video really got me excited! I’ve been wanting to experiment with vlogging for a long time but haven’t know quite where to start. Thanks for the great ‘beginning’ I look forward to getting started and tuning in next week to take the next steps with you.

    Have a great weekend!

  • mayicarles says:

Hey Marie Noelle: Ohh video for interviews that sounds fab. I use iMovie to edit my movies but there are various editing software out there, like Final Cut Pro (which was recommended by the lovely Bianca of Video for Shy People) that work for both Mac + PC.

Thanks for watching + spreading the word!

  • mayicarles says:

Kagan: YAYYYYYY so excited this was helpful + even more thrilled that I’ll get to see you on video really soon, right?

  • Cathy says:

    😉 That’s all I have to say!

  • April Starr says:

Maaaaaaaaayyyyyyiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!!!! Thank you sooooooooooooooo much! Boy, this hit on the head SO many of the questions that I have on how to get started vlogging! Your bullet proof tips were especially helpful .. I don’t want vlogging to land in that nebulous pile of someday-I’ll-do-it stuff! Awesome, awesome tips and I’m so excited for the printable so I can put it down on paper! You sure went all out on this! 😀 Really looking forward to next week’s video too. You rock!! Breaking it down into these separate questions really helps so much – instead of it being one big huge scary question. So much for me to mull over, I can’t wait to get started planning my vlog! 😀 Thank yoooooooou! (Can you tell I’m excited to vlog? YES!) 😀

  • Barbra Ignatiev says:

Great stuff! I just started as a Vloggista and there certainly are a lot of things to think about before you get started. I liked your ideas on where to find ideas for vlog posts ~ I’m def gonna go back and look at mine.

My vlog is more about my life as an artist in a new city, so it’s more diary-style. I think another thing that’s helped me in being comfortable in front of the camera is to just pretend you’re talking to a friend. I could get really caught up in who I’m making for (ideal customer), but if I think of them as already my friends it’s much easier/natural to chat on-camera.

    Thanks, Mayi!

  • Kristal says:

Thank you so much for starting this awesome series! I have been thinking of vlogging, but keep giving myself excuses not to start. I absolutely love your videos, and get excited when I find that email in my inbox! So I know how how valuable a weekly video can be for business. I certainly come back every week! 🙂

I’m off to print your worksheet, thank you!!

  • Marta Costa says:

I’m thinking more and more about this idea. WHY, GOD?

  • Kristi *aka* BohoBear says:

Great video, Mayi! I don’t think I’ll ever be a vlogger. I can just imagine my little blue parakeet behind me chirping his head off and the dog and the cats…lol…what fun!lol!

  • Tiphani Montgomery says:

I’ve been dreaming that you’d do something like this:)

My dream came true and I LOVED every minute of it!

  • mayicarles says:

Cathy: Feeling the wink girl. MUAA!

  • mayicarles says:

April SUPERStarr: I’m on an emotional high just thinking about you on camera. OHHH YES, you are destined to rock it girl! Seriously. So glad this was helpful. You have been such an incredible source of content inspiration my friend. THANK YOU THANK YOU!

  • mayicarles says:

Barbra: Vloggista… I LOVE IT! And you are such a genius, feeling like you’re talking to a friend makes total sense + I bet it helps keep the panic under control. I will totally borrow that (with copyright credits of course) + tell my clients who have little anxiety attack when vlogging. BRILLIANT!

  • mayicarles says:

Barbra (continued: Now, I’m suspecting that for some people + their business model their audience might not be the “friend” type so it’s good to take this on a case by case basis.

  • mayicarles says:

Kristal: NO MORE EXCUSES GIRL! If you’re thinking about it it’s cuz you secretly dream of turning it into a reality. What better day than today to kick start, right? Please let me know if you give it I try cuz I’m dying to watch!

  • mayicarles says:

Kim: And the Oscar for best commenter goes to YOUUUUUU!. Oh my Kim Kimy Kim I adore you too much. I don’t get tired of saying it. I had a feeling you were going to love today’s episode. You have already shown so so much video blogging potential that I know you will nail it in no time. Can’t wait to see what you come up with. CHEERING you all the way!

  • mayicarles says:

Marta: (Angelical soundtrack….) This is GOD… you must give video blog a try. You have nothing to loose!

    Where did that come from?

  • mayicarles says:

Kristi Boho Bear: I think that symphony would make a really awesome show. I think you should give it a try.

  • mayicarles says:

Tiphani Montgomery – THE ONE AND ONLY’S IN DA HOUSE! Love ya girl. LOVE YA. That’s all I have to say about that.

Ohh + yes you are destined to be a movie star. Just hope you remember your friend Mayi when you win the Actors Guild + Oscar trophy + all that jazz 🙂

  • Bianca Filoteo | Video For Shy People says:

Mayi, this is an AMAZING video!!!!!

I usually recommend people to start off with short videos because people’s attention spans are short. But yours is an exception!! Yours is over 5 mins but it’s offers both entertainment AND value!! I kept watching the whole video because you kept me pulled in 🙂

I’m so glad you mentioned that you should wear make-up. I’m a low-maintenance kinda girl but when it comes to being on-camera, the lens picks up different things so that’s why wearing make-up is important. We’ll be able to see your pretty face a lot better as it’s more defined on-camera!

If anyone is stuck on video ideas, I wrote a guest blog post at Handmade Success for some inspiration: http://handmadesuccess.com/2011/10/6-ways-to-start-using-online-video-for-your-business-2/

  • Amanda says:

    Love the Friday vlogging!

it has me excited how you make it so worth while to get into!

  • Leslie says:

Love it! This is so helpful and I am really looking forward to the next installment. My topic is totally different (making a video in Spanish about best practices for importing products from China) but I think your points about audience and style totally apply.

Thanks again and I look forward to part 2!

  • Michelle says:

LOVE LOVE LOVE 🙂 I’m so sharing this with my entire blog audience. They will love it too. Thanks Mayi 🙂

  • Linda Sparkman says:

Great, as usual! Thank you. My problem is who will I be? I’ve got so many different personas. I ‘spose I need to decide that, right?
I’ll be eagerly awaiting your next installment!

  • Tabassum says:

Amazing video and soooooooooo helpful Mayi! And if the video wasn’t enough, you’ve even created a playsheet. Love it! Can I just bottle some of your positiveness and carry it with me?? 🙂 After watching this vid, I feel like I can tackle vlogging.

I officially have no excuses to not start vlogging…except that I don’t really want my day job to find out that I’m blogging for my creative biz yet 🙁 What’s a girl to do? I think bringing my audience into my world “visually” would be great and great for business. I just have to find a way to get around that obstacle.

Oh, was that a shot of your bedroom in the vid?? So gorgeous!

  • Dia Meraz says:

You are absolutely adorable, and you have inspired me! I have wanted to start a Vlog for my photography business, but haven’t. i even convinced my kids to start their own Vlogs, and they have! They remind me daily that it’s my turn to follow through on what I wanted to start. Keep up the awesome work!
