The Most Important Page On Your Site (No It’s Not What You Think)

Can I drop a truth bomb on you without you getting all mad at me? Okay, here it goes: Prospect clients + new readers + the occasional dabbler that lands on your site, all these people, they don’t actually care about you.

It hurts your ego a little, doesn’t it? I know. Mine stings a bit too. That doesn’t make it less true though.

This crude reality is what sparked today’s episode.

In this video, I’m revealing the most important page on your website. The one that’s gonna hook visitors to your stuff + make them care about you + even buy from you. No! It’s not what you think.

Click play to learn more! (And watch some dorky dancing.)

Let’s recap, shall we? Here’s 3 reasons why you need a “Start Here” page:

  • A “Start Here” page gives your readers direction in an obvious way.
  • A “Start Here” page allows you to share your best content.
  • A “Start Here” page shifts the focus from you to them, your community

Think about it this way: When readers visit your about page they get a feeling that YOU are important. When readers visit your start here page they get the feeling that THEY are important. See the difference?

So, what are you waiting for? Start planning your “Start Here” page. Now! When it’s done, not when it’s perfect, but when it’s done, come back here + post a link to your “Start Here” page in the comment section, so we can all see it + give you feedback + a big cheer.

Thank you so much for watching + sharing!!!

  1. Love the video Mayi! My website is so new that I don’t have enough content yet to create a Start Here page, but… this reminds me that I wanted to reverse engineer to my Start Page. I got a little sidetracked, but I’m going to reorganize my editorial calendar to start posting articles I need for my Start Page so I can create one sooner rather than later. Thank you! 🙂

  2. Hi Heather!

Actually, precisely because your site is new you should reconsider creating a Start Here page NOW. Don’t wait until you accumulate content to create it. This is the first content page your new website should have. Tell me WHY you do what you do + how you can help. Walk me through. Grab me by the hand. Tell me what I should do First. Second. Third. Do I need to subscribe to your list first? What should I do after that? Guide me. Don’t leave this for later, okay?

    1. Aaaah, brilliant! You are absolutely right, that makes total sense! Ok, by Monday I will have a Start Here page. Thank you Thank you Mayi!!!

    2. Finally got my Start Here page up! Thanks so much Mayi! I never would have done this without your push. It’s definitely not perfect, but it’s done. Here it is

It will evolve as I have more content to compile there, and as I improve my writing, but I welcome any comments or feedback.

I feel so good having got this done finally! Thanks again Mayi! 🙂

  3. I lLOVE THIS… I have been wondering WHY, since I started on my website creation and business journey WHY we call the About Me page an ABOUT ME page. Everything I have learned tells me that the ABOUT ME page should tell my visitors what I CAN DO FOR THEM… so I have been constantly asking myself “WHY DOES EVERYONE CALL IT AN ABOUT ME PAGE?”… thinking “This is just what people expect to see on a website.”…

Thank you for giving me FREEDOM in this … I felt stuck on this, because I didn’t know if people would even CLICK on the ABOUT ME tab… it is hereby GONE!!! Whoot-Whoot!

    1. HAHAHAHAHA glad you’re free from About Me prison.

I’m not saying to complete erase this page. You can start by calling it ABOUT (only, instead of About Me) + giving it a less premium real state space on your website. AND moving up to prime web real state your START HERE page 🙂

  4. Your video encouraged me to update things a bit in my blog. I made a mix that suits me, for the moment.
Thank you tons! Love your videos, they are the way I discovered you : )

  5. This is eye-opening for me! It’s not the first time that Ive heard that “people don’t care about you, but care about how you can help them” but you hit the nail on the head for me. I really need to change up my website, Thanks for being so honest!!

  6. You’re hilarious Mayi – in the best way possible!!! I’m in the middle of re-designing my website so this video is very timely.

Thank you for your vibrancy & great tips and insights!!!

I’m curious, where is your Start Here page? I’m sure that you’ve got one but I haven’t been able to find it! xx

      1. Oh… I can see it clearly (she blushes)! … The thing that threw me is that I was reading the other comments, and you wrote about giving the Start Here page prime real estate space on your website – with this analogy I was expecting to find it in a ‘prime’ at the top of the page – & now I also see that you’ve moved it there also! =)

        1. You’re ABSOLUTELY right! I’m glad you called me up on it, cuz I here I was telling, and not showing very well, wasn’t I? Well… you know what they say, “Do as I say, not as I do hehehe.” Guilty as charged.

BUT! I did make the improvement quickly. Obviously!

  7. I TOTALLY love your adorable, and informative videos. I actually want to watch to the end – something I rarely do on other sites. Now you got me thinking about adding a Start Here page. Sounds like a GREAT idea my friend!
